Are Medical Spa Workers Medical Professionals?

The term “medical spa” often confuses potential customers. They think of a spa as a location filled with aestheticians, who may have plenty of training in beauty services, but certainly aren’t qualified to perform any sort of “medical” procedure. And of course, the term “medical” tends to invoke thoughts of healthcare and more intensive care like surgeries. So how does a medical spa fit into that area between surgical and beauty services? And what kinds of qualifications do medical spa workers need to perform the services offered at these locations? Keep reading to learn more.

What Is a Medical Spa?

So where does a med spa fall in the realm of treatments? As the name suggests, businesses like ours offer a range of services that can include the kinds of services you might find at a day spa, but which also include medical-grade aesthetic treatments. These latter types of treatments provide results similar to what you might get from plastic surgery, but are much less invasive.

Services like microneedling, body contouring, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion are common. Depending on the specific equipment available at the facility you choose, you may be able to receive other forms of treatment as well. You can view the wide variety of services we provide under the Services tab above.

Is There a Doctor in the House?

Medical spas can actually be overseen by practitioners from many backgrounds, as requirements vary by state. However, it’s in your best interest to find a medical spa that’s supervised by a board-certified plastic surgeon. A plastic surgeon receive medical training in not only surgical procedures, but non-surgical treatments too.

The medical director here at Le Bella Spa is William O. Murtagh, MD, and he is a board-certified plastic surgeon with unsurpassed surgical and non-surgical outcomes. While he oversees Le Bella in a supervisory role, most of the nonsurgical treatments are administered by other members of staff. Keep reading to learn more about the requirements for these positions.

Qualifications of Med Spa Workers

So, if the plastic surgeon isn’t administering your treatment, who is? If you’re worried about receiving a nonsurgical medical treatment from someone without medical training, don’t be! Treatments at med spas are administered by aesthetic nurse practitioners. Like the supervising plastic surgeon, these staff members are genuine medical professionals who have received thorough training on how to safely administer these treatments.

To qualify for a position at any medical spa, you need to have a license in esthetics. But that’s only the beginning. Aspiring med spa workers must also have a medical background and be a CNA or RN. Because medical spa treatments are so different from those offered at your average day spa, the qualifications and required experience are much stricter for businesses like ours.

Our lead nurse here is Pilar Ramos, who has received a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Florida Atlantic University. She also has a decade of experience in practicing medical aesthetics and has been certified in dozens of medical procedures as well as being a certified permanent makeup artist.

The Highest Standard of Care

Regardless of whether your treatments are being administered by Dr. Murtagh himself or through another staff member, you can rest assured that it is being performed by a highly qualified, certified medical professional. At Le Bella Spa, we take pride in providing the highest standard of care for each of our patients. Our procedures are performed in a sterile environment with the best medical aesthetic equipment, and we provide follow-up care instructions and advice for each of our patients.
